内容简介
Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

troubadourin的评论Roy是个情绪化的男人，他有什么说什么，把自己的脆弱完全展现。Celestial是个婊，懦弱，明明自己变了心，连承认都勇气都没有，在和Roy狱中信重，还给出分手的什么冠冕堂皇的理由。俩人都不咋滴，我看不上。但我很喜欢作者的语言风格，结局也不错，各走各的路。

值得表扬的评论Powerful and heartbreaking and convincing because each of the characters is fatally flawed and the reader is not allowed any feelings of superiority. A deep call for grace and forgiveness, even if you don’t think you need it, or that you’ve done nothing wrong. After all, a woman is only human, and men are fallen.

Interesting premise that takes us thru black america (class diff&mobility, incarceration, marriage, food), steeped in the pride&particularities of black culture. 5 yrs fly by in haunting epistolary section. Told thru 3 voices. Prose borders on sentimental. Middle w/ flashback drags, simple plot carrying endless inner monologue, ends fast&neat.

Mimi's Musings的评论故事梗概很简单：在回公婆家的夜晚丈夫被受害人指控为强奸犯，一瞬间灾难极速驶向这对新婚夫妻，丈夫的牢狱之灾避无可避，而这对夫妻，这段婚姻又将走向哪里。而很重要的是，所谓的强奸案，男主人公是无辜的。Jones在这本书里很聪明的地方是她没有把这个故事写成courtroom drama，也未评论美国社会的种族冲突。她只描绘了这一段爱情婚姻和家庭里的人们，他们受到的影响，他们的individuality. 尽管性别，性格，经济社会背景的不同，但在这个不公正的法律系统作为故事背景之下，无论个人有多少独立性，你都可能是下一个Roy. 这样的对比，反而深深体现社会问题。

Mamie的评论到底什么是婚姻，这一部分我get了作者想说的，也确实值得思考。对于司法不公的批判也说得够明白了。可到底什么是家庭，洋洋洒洒说了好多，我一脸懵逼。（此处剧透：对于黑人来说，女人怀孕时跑了的男人，在几十年后遇见了，还是孩子值得尊重的父亲？）你解释婚姻是什么之前，能不能先介绍一下“父亲”的概念？可能确实是文化差异吧，让我想起了微博上关于“黑人父亲”的没品笑话。中后段冲突应该达到高潮，作者文风却还是那么墨迹，整体失去节奏。看得人暴躁不止的时候，结尾的速度就很让人欣喜了。女主在结尾的情感走向也是个谜，我往前翻了半天，不知道自己错过了什么。人物性格没有一个讨喜的，我还能说什么，说多了不能保持pc。
